Recent Project: Lafayette Aspen Groove
Sharing a project that we’re happy to be a part of this season. I’d like to highlight the process from design consultation all the way to a complete landscape. At times the process can be forgotten or overlooked as we relish with all the elements finally in place. The design phase and material selections are the foundation of a great project. During the design phase creativity begins but so much information is already absorbed and communication between client and contractor is key.
We were contacted by a mother and daughter neighbors in Lafayette Colorado. They were looking for a garden area, patio areas to grill and entertain small groups. They also wanted no turf areas and native plantings. They both really liked aspen trees and a natural look.
Initial Consultation
On our first appointment we got so much accomplished sharing ideas, concepts, and making a great connection. An Aspen Groove throughout was to be the driving theme with a new gate placed in the middle to travel freely between yards. Rocks accents & native plantings would catch the eye and bring balance. Both yards would share the same materials but one being more of an organic style the other more modern. Big thanks to ‘The Rock Garden’ in Fort Collins for providing top notch flagstone and some colorful boulders! First step in construction was setting up the concrete walkways and patio areas, which will give way later to a unique component.

Second Phase
It feels fantastic to see designs come to life as you work through necessary steps taking the time to construct items for the longterm and Colorado’s challenging outdoor environments.
Our crews know there will be hurdles to overcome as its construction, and designs often translate different from paper to the actual site. These hurdles can be viewed as a negative or you can adjust, brainstorm, and come up with an end result that outshines the original concept!
Our custom patio surprise has been exposed! This is a technique Ive been working on for the past several years combining stone accents like puzzle pieces, making way for a entertainment space like no other in your neighborhood.
Also you cant forget the plant layout & arrangements! Nothing else brings the balance full circle like a planting design that incorporates several hardy varieties, seasonal interest, layering, and color!

Final Phase
All the final details do take a little care & finesse. This is the time to take all the hard work and finish a project strong for your clients enjoyment. We also inquire about any request or items to be altered along the way to smooth things before the final day approaches.
After all planting is complete a final grade is done to shape and mold the remaining landscape. Next added a drip Irrigation system giving each plant its specific watering needs. We then tested the overall performance and to make sure no plants were missed.
Ground cover such as rock or mulch is chosen and often times we create designs even with these areas to break up the eye or add more color and texture.
On this particular project the flagstone patios received a once over to make sure all stones were level and didn’t shift when walked over. Once washed/dried we apply a polymeric sand into joints to protect, lock in stones and finalize the look of a custom patio.
On the back end a final walk through is scheduled to answer any care question, find out if any items were missed and to talk about what a client can expect with their new outdoor environment. Irrigation clocks & schedules are discussed and operations are demonstrated.
Any special instructions are given for features like gas fire pits etc. Also detailed landscape care packets are emailed for future reference leaving home owners with tools for gardening success for years to come.
